Mock Draft version 4.0

So, based on the recent trade for Strongside Linebacker Julian Peterson, the Lions no longer have any need to draft Aaron Curry with the number 1 overall pick.

First pick, first round, number 1 overall

Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

Smith is a former Tight End, meaning he has the size and quickness to protect Culpepper's backside, allowing him to immediately move in and start.  With this draft pick, the Lion's now can move Jeff Backus to left gaurd, where his shorter arm reach and banged up knees will allow him to be more effective than at tackle.  With Raiola at Center, Peterman at Gaurd, and last years first round pick Gosder Cherilus at Right Tackle, the Lions wont need a phenom QB like Matt Stafford to be effective, all they would need is a game-manager to hand the ball off to Kevin Smith and toss it up to Calvin Johnson.

2nd pick, 1st round, number 20 overall

Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss

The Lions traded their only effective DT in Cory Redding to Seattle for Julian Peterson, so now they desperately need a replacement.  Jerry is a mammoth DT, more of a run-stuffer then a pass rusher like Redding, and with the new addition of Grady Jackson and the development of Andre Fluellen, the Lion's will be good on the interior of the defensive line.

3rd Pick, 2nd Round, number 33 overall

Louis Delmas, FS, Western Michigan

The Lion's have added Aaron Henry, Philip Buchanon, and Eric King to shore up their cornerback position, and now they need a compliment to Daniel Bullocks at the safety position.  Delmas isnt quite the tackler or hitter that Bullocks is, but when it comes to speed and coverage ability, Delmas is leaps and bounds above Bullocks, providing an excellent combo in the secondary.

4th pick, 3rd Round, number 65 overall

Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech

Harrell, considered by many to be a system QB, has superior accuracy and a pretty strong arm.  With Culpepper under contract for two years, Harrell can sit and watch, and be ready to step in with Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith perennial pro bowlers by 2011.  Last year, the lions drafted Kevin Smith in the 3rd round and after the season where Smith put up almost 1,000 yds behind and awful offensive line, and is now considered one of the Steals of the draft.  harrel will be considered that steal of this years draft.

5th Pick, 3rd round, number 82 overall

Derrick Williams, WR, Penn State

the Lion's have phenom Calvin Johnson at the Z receiver position, and recently signed Bryant Johnson to be his compliment at the X receiver.  Both Receivers are over 6'3", so the Lion's need a smaller receiver to take over at the slot position to run the quick outs and screens in order to get them in open space.  Williams is only about 5'10", but runs in the low 4.4's in the 40yd dash and has an amazing ability to avoid contact, which will provide an excellent compliment to the two taller deep threats in Johnson n Johnson

I like the idea of getting Delmas, and even the pick of Smith would be fine with me. But if you have the Lions taking Harrell in the 3rd round to start in a couple of years, why not go for the best 2 or 3 out there in the draft. It is still our biggest need. I also dont believe that we will take a DT in the first round.

i like the idea of harrell in the third rd over stafford/sanchez/freeman because i believe the most glaring need is a left tackle. regardless of how good a QB you have, its not gonna matter if he's on his ass before he can throw. i think that harrell in the third round with smith in the first is a better value than stafford in the first and like a troy kopog in the third rd. and the DT choice was up in the air....the lions do not have a starter worthy tackle other than grady jackson, and hes 34! they desperately need help there, but i was contemplating Tyson Jackson and Laurinitis

I think everyone has to accept the fact that the Lions WILL mess this pick up by drafting Stafford first overall. The only way that this isn't going to happen is if we trade for the infamously disgruntled and childish Jay Cutler. We have much bigger holes to fill then the quarterback position namely almost every position on the defensive side of the ball and a makeover of the offensive line. Culpepper will do just fine throwing bombs to Calvin for one more season. It is inevitable that we are going to be one of the worst 3 teams next year and that's when we should either take Bradford or McCoy as the new face of the franchise.

Williams after Harrell? I don't think so. And I went over it with you. Delmas at 33 is a gigantic reach not to mention the lions having MUCH bigger needs elsewhere including MLB, DE, and OG because pearman is absolute trash. They already have a competition at the free safety spot between Kalvin Pearson who i was impressed with last year (as far as anyone can be impressed with a lions defensive player) and Gerald Alexander who was beat up last year with injuries but his rookie season had 82 tackles 2 sacks 2 interceptions and also came from Boise State so knows how to win. (Defense that did just enough to contain Adrian Peterson in the instant classic fiesta bowl win). Also I like Eugene Monroe out of Virginia at tackle more than smith. Bigger Body and much quicker feet. Also, his former teammate Branden Albert had a solid rookie season this past year. With that being said I would still not rule out Aaron Curry ("the safest pick in the draft") and another possibility in B.J Raji. Raji would help against the run big time. (which if you stop the run against the bears and vikings...you win) Schwartz and Mayhew have said if they draft Curry he will be in the middle. Which would make for a solid line backing core if you ask me.

i agree most with the curry/peterson/sims linebacking corps, although i feel that peterson/sims/dizon with a blue chip LT is a better option. I also agree with the Pearson comment, and i will address that in my next mock. however, i disagree with monroe over smith, and i also disagree with raji first overall, because we can get better quality on the defensive line later in the draft than we can offensive line.
